Porcelain crowns are strong caps that your San Antonio dentist at Gies Family Dental places over your natural teeth to protect the underlying tooth structure. Whether from a weakened, fractured, or decayed tooth or because you’ve had root canal therapy, a crown keeps your natural tooth protected while fully restoring the appearance and function of your smile.
Dr. Gies will suggest a crown for people who have:
There are many types of crowns available, including ceramic and metal, but porcelain crowns are the most popular. Dr. Gies will work closely with you to determine the right material for you and your budget.
Getting a crown usually takes two appointments. Once you and Dr. Gies determine that a crown is the best option for you, he will prepare your tooth for the crown. This usually means removing decay, if necessary, and shaving down some enamel to make sure the crown fits snugly between your teeth. Once he has prepared your tooth, Dr. Gies will take an impression of your tooth or teeth to send to the lab. Before you leave, he will fit you with a temporary crown while your porcelain crown is made specifically for you in a lab, a process that typically takes about two weeks.
Once your crown is completed, you will come back to our office where Dr. Gies will place your final crown.
Dental crowns can range from $800 – $1700 per crown, but most dental insurances generally cover at least a portion of the cost. Talk to our knowledgeable billing staff about your insurance plan if you are unsure what is covered. We are also proud to partner with CareCredit so that you can get the procedures you need at a monthly cost you can afford.
